Calendar of Cultural Events Please verify dates and times with The Kosciuszko Foundation
Director of Cultural Affairs Gombrowicz Centennial Celebration Witold Gombrowicz (1904 - 1969) is the single most important Polish prose writer of the 20th century. He is best known for his novels Ferdydurke (1937), Pornografia (1960, made into a feature film last year), the play Princess Ivona (1935) and his journals. He left Poland in 1939 and lived in Argentina for twenty years, returning to Europe shortly before his death. He was controversial because of his anti-establishment positions on most subjects, but the power and originality of his language is undeniable. This centennial year is being marked with many conferences and events in Poland and throughout the world; there will be a major convention later this month at Yale University, where his papers are stored. The Kosciuszko Foundation will have readings in Polish and English from Bacacay, an early collection of short stories published in English for the first time this year. (Bacacay is the name of Gombrowicz's street in Buenos Aires). There will also be a documentary film by Jan Kolski, who directed Pornografia. Tickets are $10, and include a reception. Event in collaboration with Archipelago Books, which published Bacacay, and supported by the Tadeusz Solowij Literary Fund. All events take place at the Foundation House, unless otherwise noted. Programs subject to change. Click here for directions. Kosciuszko Foundation programs are supported by the Mary F. Koons Charitable Trust, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), the Tadeusz Solowij Literary Fund, and the KF Cultural Fund.
