Program Description - FOR INFORMATION ONLY
Kosciuszko Foundation Tuition Scholarships support American students of Polish descent for full-time graduate studies in the United States. All majors are supported. Funding is for academic year September 2012 - May 2013. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $7,000.
The Tuition Scholarship program also supports certain programs including the one-year Masters program at the Center for European Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow and English Schools of Medicine in Poland.
Special funding is allocated for:
- law and engineering studies at DePaul University and non-public colleges and universities in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin;
- residents of Bayonne, NJ for studies in nursing, teaching and business;
- residents of Amsterdam, NY, Chicopee, MA and New Hampshire;
- journalism, social service, physical-chemical and biological sciences, engineering, medical research, teaching, piano and violin, pharmacy.
Eligibility
United States citizens and permanent residents of Polish descent who are beginning or continuing graduate studies in academic year September 2012 - May 2013 and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Scholarships are given for full-time studies only. United States citizens of non-Polish descent are considered when their studies are primarily focused on Polish studies. Only one member per immediate family may receive a Tuition Scholarship during any given academic year. Scholarships are granted for one academic year and may be renewed upon re-application for a maximum of one additional year.
Selection Criteria
Selection is based on academic excellence, the applicant's academic achievements, interests and motivation, the applicant's interest in Polish subjects or involvement in the Polish American community. Financial need is taken into consideration.
Application Procedure
Submit a non-refundable application fee of $35 and the following materials:
- The January 5th application deadline for scholarships towards academic year 2012-2013 is closed. Bayonne, NJ residents see above.
- Applications for academic year 2013-2014 will be available here for download in Fall 2012.
- A statement of purpose - discuss your major, specialization and academic goals. A minimum of three pages, double spaced. Include your full name, "2012-2013" and page numbers on the upper right hand corner of each page of your statement.
- Two passport-size photos for publication purposes. Print your full name on the reverse sides. Xerox and colored copies are not accepted, however, you may e-mail a .jpeg file to Addy@thekf.org. Please use the following file naming convention: photo-12-13-your last name-first name.
- Provide proof of Polish ancestry: use birth certificates, passports, naturalization papers and other documents to show the line of descent from the ancestor who was born in Poland to the applicant. Include this cover page to outline your heritage. If documentation is not available, a letter from a prominent member of the community verifying your Polish ancestry will be accepted. Letters from relatives are not accepted.
- Official transcripts for the last three full years of academic work through Summer 2011. Fall 2011 coursework will not be considered.
- Two confidential letters of academic reference from professors/teachers submitted on university letterhead, in a sealed envelope.
- College seniors: submit a copy of your graduate school acceptance letter. Letters are accepted through May 31st.
- Re-applicants to the program need not submit photos and proof of Polish descent.
- The KF cannot confirm receipt of materials by phone. Include a self-addressed stamped post-card with your application materials or send an e-mail to Addy@thekf.org.
- Faxed materials will not be accepted.
- Do not staple check to checklist.

Notification of results is made in writing and sent to the applicant's permanent address on or about May 31, 2012. A time-line for Tuition Scholarships towards academic year 2012-2013 is available here.
Changes in subject area which are made following scholarship notification may result in re-consideration or cancellation of scholarship award.
