Tuition Scholarship Program

Program Description

Kosciuszko Foundation Tuition Scholarships support American students of Polish descent for full-time graduate studies in the United States. All majors are supported.   Funding is for academic year September 2013 - May 2014. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $7,000.

The Tuition Scholarship program also supports the one year Masters program at the Center for European Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow  and English Schools of Medicine in Poland.

Within the Tuition Scholarship program, special funding is allocated for:

  • law and engineering studies at DePaul University and non-public colleges and universities in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin; 
  • residents of Bayonne, NJ who are majoring in nursing, teaching and business (open deadline - please call for information);
  • residents of Amsterdam, NY, Chicopee, MA, and New Hampshire;
  • residents of Fairfield and New Haven counties in CT as well as residents of CT;
  • leadership, excellent written and verbal communication and participation in school and/or community activities;
  • journalism; physical-chemical, biological and technical sciences; natural sciences; dentistry; applied sciences; medicine; music; humanities; social sciences; architecture; engineering; medical research; education; piano performance;  violin performance; law; art; fine arts;  pharmacy; chemistry; accounting; business administration; banking; and finance.

 

ELIGIBILITY

United States citizens and permanent residents of Polish descent who are beginning or continuing graduate studies in academic year September 2013 - May 2014 and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Scholarships are awarded for full-time studies only. United States citizens of non-Polish descent are considered when their studies are primarily focused on Polish studies. Only one member per immediate family may receive a Tuition Scholarship during any given academic year. Scholarships are granted for one academic year.  Applicants may re-apply.  Awards are limited to only two tuition scholarships per individual during the period of his/her studies.   

Selection Criteria

Selection is based on academic excellence, the applicant's academic achievements, interests and motivation, the applicant's interest in Polish subjects or involvement in the Polish American community. Financial need is taken into consideration.

Application Procedure

Submit a non-refundable application fee of $35 and the following materials:

  • A - Completed Tuition Scholarship Application;
  • B - Completed Financial Information Form;  
  • C - Statement of Purpose;
  • D - Official Transcripts;
  • E - Two confidential Letters of Reference;
  • F - Letter of Acceptance to graduate school (entrants only);
  • G - Proof of Polish Ancestry;
  • H - Passport-size photo;
  • I - Checklist.

Notes:

  • In the Statement of Purpose discuss the major, specialization and academic goals for which you are requesting scholarship support.    Your statement should be a minimum of three pages, double spaced.  Include your full name, "TU 2013-2014" and page numbers on the upper right hand corner of each page of your statement. Do not staple pages together.
  • Official transcripts for the last three full years of academic work through Summer 2012. 
  • Letters of Reference must be from professors/teachers and submitted on university letterhead in a sealed envelope.  Letters may be submitted together with the application or under separate cover.
  • Letters of Acceptance are required for applicants who are seeking entry to  graduate schools and professional studies leading to a degree.  Letters may be submitted throughout the scholarship application evaluation process which ends with notification in late May 2013.
  • Proof of Polish Ancestry: use birth certificates, passports, naturalization papers and other documents to show the line of descent from the ancestor who was born in Poland to the applicant. Include this cover page to outline your heritage. Highlight relevant names in supporting documents. If documentation is not available, a letter from a prominent member of the community verifying your Polish ancestry will be accepted. Letters from relatives are not accepted.
  • Passport-size photo should be suitable for publication in the Kosciuszko Foundation's Newsletter.  Please print your full name on the reverse side of your hard copy photos or e-mail an electronic photo to Addy@TheKF.org (JPEG and PDF file extensions).  Please use the following file naming convention for electronic photos: "TU-14-photo-Last name-First Name"
  • The KF cannot confirm receipt of materials by phone.
  • Faxed materials will not be accepted.
  • Do not staple check/money order to checklist.
  • Do not staple application forms and essay pages.

Notes for Re-applicants:

  • With the exception of photos and proof of Polish descent, scholarship re-applicants must update all materials since their last application submission including the Statement of Purpose; Official Transcripts through Summer 2012 (some candidates may be requested to submit transcripts for Fall 2012); Two Letters of Reference; Tuition Scholarship Application; Financial Information Form; and Checklist;
  • Submit updated materials with $35 non-refundable application fee;  
  • Re-applicants are considered together with new applicants for funding towards academic year 2013-2014;
  • Please see Notes above for additional information and file naming conventions or contact the Grants Department;
  • The KF cannot confirm receipt of materials by phone.

Notification of results is made in writing on or about May 31, 2013.

Scholarship applications are considered based on the materials submitted and stated goals as presented in the Statement of Purpose. Changes in subject area which are made following scholarship notification may result in re-consideration or cancellation of the scholarship award.
